All NSP photographs from Natural Swimming Pools A Guide for Building by Michael Littlewood

FAQs

Safety

Natural swimming pools are safe and clean. They have been used in Europe

for many years and pass strict EU standards, including water quality sampling.

Conversions

Regular pools can easily be converted to natural swimming pools

Size

About 400 square feet is the minimum size requirement. About 50% of the surface must be vegetated.

Equipment

A skimmer and filter are recommended for clean, clear water and a pump is used for circulation.

Maintenance

Maintenance is less than that of a chemical pool. The water garden must be weeded and tended, if equipment fails then it must be repaired, and the pool will need topping off due to evaporative losses.

Mosquitoes

Pools do not attract mosquitoes, as the water is not stagnant and natural predators are abound.

Wildlife Habitat

Natural swimming pools provide valuable habitat for wildlife
